David Boykin Trio :
Personnel: David Boykin – saxophone, Alex Wing –bass, James Woodley – drums
The line up for this project is different than we’ve heard previously from Boykin. He works in a more intimate trio format of sax, bass, and drums, than his usual quintet that includes piano and flute. Alex Wing is heard here on electric bass giving the music a different sound than what we usually here from Boykin who’s always recorded before with acoustic bass. This change accompanied with the use of 17-year young drummer, James Woodley, makes for an interesting fresh sound. Woodley is a former student of Boykin’s from DuSable Leadership Academy where Boykin briefly taught music. Woodley’s ear is clearly tuned differently than most of the older traditional jazz drummers we’ve heard Boykin work with previously. This difference in sound of this combination is most obviously appreciated on some of the more funk-influenced pieces, but the treatment that this rhythm section gives to the ballads and freer pieces should be noted as well.
