Timeless, Live at the Velvet Lounge is Delmark’s third live release from the recently turned 77-years young Fred Anderson! To say that this powerful recording is an emotional and historical one is quite the understatement. By the time you read this, this quarter century old mecca for free jazz/improv musicians and fans will probably have been demolished. This vital, timeless music will continue to thrive however at the new Velvet Lounge, which will reopen a block away at 67 E. Cermak Road in Chicago.
If you’ve never had the sensual pleasure of experiencing Mr. Anderson and his Velvet Lounge in person, Delmark will give you the next best thing with this CD which invites you to a front row seat and intimate tour of Fred’s funky and spiritual Chicago jazz institution. You can see Fred, hunched over, digging deep into the depths of his subconscious, creating a distinctive, honest, and huge tone on his tenor. This fully improvised set was captured on a beautiful summer night in Chicago where Fred’s sax was more than cooperating, and the intensely powerful and deeply sensitive rhythm section of the incomparable Hamid Drake and Harrison Bankhead was completely on fire and locked in. Check out Hamid’s beautifully soothing chants during “By Many Names” and Harrison’s lowdown bass groove on “Timeless”.
