Critics have called saxophonist David Boykin one of Chicago's "best kept secrets." A master of improvisation, his free jazz knows no musical boundaries.
Keeping busy as leader of the David Boykin Expanse, member of Boykin, Seigfried and Reed, and founder of Sonic Healing Ministries, David Boykin is one of the most dynamic musicians on Chicago's rich and diverse music scene.
Whether playing hard bop or free jazz – with a grip on the music just tight enough to keep it from collapsing into chaos – Boykin lets his tunes float to distant worlds. He's documented some of those voyages in "Evidence of Life on Other Planets, Vol. 1 and 2," an album he recorded with yet another of his ensembles, the David Boykin Outet.
In addition to infusing his experimental hip-hop lyrics into original jazz compositions, Boykin also lends his musical talents to genre-crossing multimedia projects.
